Note: The paper consists of three sections.

Section A consists of  5 short answer questions. The candidate is required to answer all the five questions in about 70-80 words. Each question carries 3 marks.    (5×3=15)

Section B consists of  5 medium answer questions. The candidate is required to answer all the five questions in about 250-300 words. Each question carries 7 marks.     (5×7=15)

Section C consists of  4 long answer questions. The candidate is required to answer any two questions in about 500-600 words. Each question carries 15 marks.     (2×15=30)

Section - A
1. Show that f(x) contains only sine terms for old functions.
2. What do you understand by superposition principle?
3. In a Newton’s rings experiment, the diameter of 10th dark ring due to wavelength 6000 Ã… in air is 0.5 cm. Calculate the radius of curvature of lens.
4. In a Fraunhofer diffraction pattern due to a narrow slit, a screen is placed 2m away from the lens. If the slit width is 0.2 mm and the first minimalie 5 mm on either sides of the central maximum, find the wavelength of light.
5. Explain Malas Law.

Section - B
1. Discuss how the interval of fourier expansion is extended from (-Ï€,Ï€) to (-1, 1) for a periodic function f(x).
2. Derive an expression for the velocity of transverse waves in a sting.
3. Find an expression for fring width in case of young’s double slit experiment.
4. What is a zone plate? Derive an expression for its focal length.
5. State and derive Brewster’s law.

1. State properties of Fourier series. Give analysis of square wave in terms of Fourier coefficients.
2. Explain the terms plage velocity and group velocity are identical for a non - dispersive medium.
3. Describe construction and working of michelson interferometer. How will you use it to determine wavelength of monochromatic light?
4. i) Derive an expression for dispersive power of granting.
ii) What is Rayleigh’s criterion for resolution? Derive an expression for the resolving power of granting.
5. Define specific rotation. Describe the construction and working of Laurents half - shade polarimeter. Explain how it is used to determine the specific rotation of sugar solution.

UNIT - I
1. a) If A is a non-empty subset of R that is bounded below, show that A has a greatest lower bound in R. Find g.l.b. of {Ï€+1, Ï€+1/2, Ï€+1/3,.....}

b) When do we say that sequence {xn} of real numbers has the limit L? Show that the limit of a convergent sequence of real numbers is unique.

2. a) i) If a sequence {xn} of real numbers is convergent, show that {xn} is bounded.

ii) Show that a non- decreasing sequence which is bounded above is convergent.

b) Define Cauchy sequence of real numbers and show that a Cauchy sequence of real numbers is convergent.

b) State D’Alembert’s ratio test and Raabe’s test and show by giving an example that Raabe’s test is stronger than D’Alembert’s ratio test.




UNIT – III
5. a) Prove that Æ’(x) = xn, x R (n is a positive integer) is continuous at each x and deduce that easy polynomial function is continuous at each point of R. Give an example to show that not easy continuous function is differentiable.

b) State Rolle’s theorem and find a suitable point c of Rolle’s theorem for the function,
Æ’(x) = (x-a) (b-x), x [a,b]. Show that between two consecutive zeroes of Æ’'(x) there lies a zero of Æ’(x).

6. a) State Mean value theorem & use it to show that if Æ’'(x) = 0  x  (a, b), then Æ’(x) is constant on [a, b]. What happens, if you replace Æ’'(x) = 0  x  (a, b) by Æ’'(x) = 0  x  (a,b)? 


b) State Taylor’s theorem with Lagrange’s form of the remainder and obtain Maclaurin's infinite series for Æ’(x) = log (1 + x).

UNIT – IV
7. a) Prove that if θ is real and n is rational, then (cos θ + isin θ)n = cos nθ + isin nθ.

b) Determine all roots of x9 – 1 = 0 by De - Moivre’s theorem and find out which of these roots satisfy x3 – 1 = 0.
